Taking a Legacy Manufacturer Digital: What a B2B Platform Actually Needs

Parin Labgrown is a lab-grown diamond manufacturer with roots back to 1995, run for decades on phone calls and relationships. I built the platform that took that business direct-to-trade. The hard part wasn't the catalogue. It was building trust into a system that had never needed one before.

What’s actually different about a B2B buyer vs a consumer shopper?

A B2B buyer already knows what they want and is judging speed and reliability, not being sold a feeling. They want to self-serve where possible, and they’ll walk if the digital experience gets in the way.

McKinsey’s B2B Pulse survey found buyer interactions now split roughly into thirds across in-person, remote and digital self-service, and 54% of B2B decision makers would abandon a purchase or switch suppliers after a poor-quality digital experience. For a manufacturer, the website isn’t a brochure anymore. It’s a third of the sales channel, with no second chances.

What does taking a manual business digital actually involve?

It means replacing phone calls and spreadsheets with a real ordering system: searchable stock, order placement, tracking, invoicing and fulfilment, without losing the trust a relationship-run business was built on.

For Parin Labgrown, that meant a full inventory and purchase system covering certified stones, melee and fancy shapes, plus a custom backend for placing and tracking orders, invoicing and fulfilment. 10,000+ certified stones are searchable online, with same-day dispatch built directly into the ordering flow, and a buyer can filter, select and confirm an order in under two minutes.

What should a B2B buyer be able to do without calling anyone?

Filter stock, confirm specifications, place an order and get a dispatch date. If any of those four steps still requires a phone call, the platform isn’t finished yet.

Parin Labgrown’s Retail Jewelry Operations Manager, Parin Moradiya, put it this way after launch: “The design turned out exactly how I envisioned it, if not better. It feels modern, polished, and perfectly aligned with our brand. I’m probably going to recommend The Design Shop for a lot more projects.”

What I learned building it

The hard part wasn’t the catalogue or the checkout flow. It was earning, in software, the trust a 30-year-old relationship-run business had always delivered in person. That meant showing real stock, real specs and a real dispatch date at every step, nothing vague, because a trade buyer who’s used to a phone call checking every detail won’t accept a site that hides any of it.
